The Swedish city of Piteå is relying on innovative technologies to make urban traffic more sustainable and improve air quality. A central component of this endeavor is the "Lätt att göra rätt" ("Just do the right thing") project, which aims to motivate citizens to choose more sustainable mobility options.

A key component of this project is traffic analysis with PMX TCR Radar Counters. PiteEnergi has installed 17 of these sensors in Piteå to measure the traffic flow of vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. The aim is to use this data to develop smart mobility strategies and raise public awareness of sustainable modes of transport.

Why traffic monitoring is so important in Piteå

Piteå struggles with high levels of particulate pollution in the air, particularly from road traffic. This air pollution has a direct impact on the health of residents, especially children, who are more sensitive to pollutants. It is therefore crucial to promote alternatives to private motorized transport and to better understand the mobility flows of the city.

This is where the PMX TCR Radar Object Counters come into play. They enable a detailed analysis of traffic flows by detecting vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians in real time - without cameras and in compliance with data protection.

Technology for a sustainable future

The city of Piteå relies on PMX TCR Radar Sensors to record traffic flows precisely and in a data protection-friendly manner - without any cameras. The sensors provide reliable measurements in all weathers, detect different road users and are particularly energy-efficient and low-maintenance - perfect for smart city applications.

"Our hope is that passers-by will reflect on the information and choose sustainable travel habits for themselves and the environment."

 Project Manager in Piteå

Supplemented by air quality sensors, the data collected enables a detailed analysis of the environmental impact of traffic. This enables the city to develop targeted traffic control measures. One innovative approach: LED screens on central streets show not only the current air quality but also the daily number of pedestrians. This sensitizes the population to sustainable mobility and encourages them to rethink.
